Add your buddies to this list. Once you ve done that, you can see who is logged into the system and available for chatting. To add a buddy, click on the Buddies menu and select Add Buddy. The Add Buddy window opens. Fill in your buddy s screen name. If you like, you can also fill in an alias for your buddy. (This is useful if your buddy s screen name is something you re unlikely to remember.) When you ve done this, click Add. Your buddy should now appear in the Buddy List. If he does not, he may not be logged in. Click on the Buddies menu and select Show Offline Buddies. This shows all of your buddies, whether they re logged in or not. To chat with a buddy, click on that buddy s name to highlight it. Then click the IM button. (Alternatively, you can just double-click your buddy s name in the list.) This opens a chat window, as shown in Figure 12-18.

frequency, the strong polarization of the particle e ectively draws energy into the particle (Fig 55b) This e ect can be observed as a strong enhancement in the scattering cross section in optical extinction measurements [303, 346] The dipole surface plasmon resonance is most pronounced for particles much smaller than the wavelength of the exciting light, since in this case all conduction electrons of the particle are excited in phase The resonance frequency is determined by the particle material, the shape of the particle, and the refractive index of the surrounding host Surface plasmons can be e ciently excited in the noble metals gold, silver, and copper due to their free-electron-like behavior; for these metals the plasmon resonance occurs in the visible range of light in a variety of hosts.

Figure 8.2 shows some features of the model precalciner operation. The outline shows the edges of the precalciner vessel, with the exit duct directed away from the point of observation. Velocity vectors are projected from lines across the centre of the vessel at 10 heights. Temperature contours are plotted on two planes, at 11.4 m, and at 20.4 m from the base. These are at the height of available access ports in the wall of the real precalciner, which will be referred to in the validation section. The behaviour of the particles in the model are represented by three coal particle trajectories from each of the coal inlets and six tyre chip trajectories from the tyre inlet. Some qualitative aspects of the predicted behaviour will be drawn from this figure in the following sections. 8.2.1 CFD results The model shows that particles injected at the raw meal inlet (RMI), are strongly influenced by the gases injected at the tertiary air duct (TAD). Of the mass of raw meal injected approximately 85 per cent is driven across to the far side. The momentum of the gases from the TAD is 27 kg/s at 30 m/s compared to 55 kg/s of raw meal particles at approximately 15 m/s. The effect of turbulence in the real installation tends to disperse the particles in random patterns. CFD shows that the initial common trajectory is toward the right-hand side of the precalciner in the conical section, despite turbulence effects. The effect of turbulence is significant in dispersing the particles following their passage beyond the throat of the conical section. There is then significant recirculation of some particles in the main cylindrical section before exit. The time a particle will take to traverse from inlet to exit thus varies considerably;

Integrated optics faces the fundamental limitation that, for the guiding, modulation, and ampli cation of light, in a useful manner, structures are needed that have dimensions comparable to the wavelength of light Recently, it was shown theoretically that this problem can be avoided by transporting electromagnetic energy along linear chains of closely spaced metal nanoparticles This transport relies on the near eld electrodynamic interaction between metal particles, resulting in coupled plasmon modes [347] Waveguides based on the principle of total internal re ection (eg, optical bers) do not allow for the guiding of light around sharp corners with a bending radius considerably smaller than the wavelength of light [142, 348] Engineering of defect modes in photonic crystals has enabled the fabrication of defect waveguides with (more) complex guiding geometries [142, 349, 350].

The integration of active devices such as defect mode lasers into photonic crystals is expected to advance the creation of optical chips [351] The size and density of optical devices employing these technologies, however, are restricted by the di raction limit /2n of light This imposes a lower size limit of a few hundred nanometers on the optical mode size; hence, a size mismatch between highly integrated electronic devices with lateral dimensions of a few tens of nanometers and optical guiding components persists and needs to be overcome [142] The di raction limit for the guiding of electromagnetic energy can be overcome if the optical mode is converted into a nonradiating mode that can be con ned to lateral dimensions smaller than the di raction limit [142].
